BLAINE, Wash. — Reports of an explosion and a chaotic scene initially unfolded Saturday morning at the BP Cherry Point Refinery, where at least four workers were injured before crews brought the situation under control.
Authorities confirm that at least four workers suffered injuries, and emergency crews transported them to a local hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, all other refinery personnel remain accounted for.
Witnesses at the refinery, along with residents in nearby Birch Bay, reported hearing an explosion at approximately 10:20 a.m. Shortly after, BP evacuated employees from the facility as a precaution.
“We can confirm four people have been injured and have been transported to a local hospital,” a BP press statement said. “Our top priority is the safety of our employees, contractors, and the community.”
“We will share additional information as it becomes available,” the statement said.
Reports of an Explosion
Whatcom County Fire and EMS crews arrived on scene around 10:25 a.m., and they quickly assisted in transporting the injured workers.
“The incident was contained, and there is no reported risk to the surrounding community,” Whatcom County Fire District Seven said.
However, authorities have not yet identified the cause of the incident, and investigators continue to assess what led to the explosion.
“Thinking of the workers injured at the BP Cherry Point Refinery today, as well as all of our neighbors, friends, and families who are shaken to hear of this incident,” Rep. Alicia Rule said. “I’m monitoring this closely and holding our community in my thoughts as we hope for full and swift recovery.”
