BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Port of Bellingham will add new parking spaces to the Downtown Waterfront. Officials say the expansion will improve access during the upcoming FIFA World Cup and other major events planned for the area.
“109 new parking spots are coming to the Downtown Waterfront and we know that’s music to a lot of ears,” port officials said Friday.
New Parking Expansion at Granary Lot
The expansion extends the Granary Lot, which already serves Granary Building businesses, Downtown Waterfront events, the Portal Container Village, and Waypoint Park. The lot often reaches capacity during peak summer weekends and events. Drivers frequently circle the area looking for parking.
“This lot extension will help reduce that frustration,” port officials said. “We are working with our city and development partners to create a parking strategy that serves the area as it transitions from temporary to permanent development over the long term.”
The new 109 spaces aim to reduce that congestion and improve access to the waterfront district.
Improved Access for Visitors and Businesses
The expanded lot should support more foot traffic to nearby businesses and attractions. Port officials say the goal is simple — make waterfront visits easier and reduce parking frustration. The added capacity also supports larger events in the area.
The new section will include ADA parking spaces, infrastructure improvements, and temporary access points for the future skate park.
Part of a Longer-Term Parking Strategy
The expansion is part of a broader parking plan for the Downtown Waterfront. The Port is working with the city and development partners on a long-term strategy that will support growth while balancing access needs. For now, the new spaces should ease congestion during peak periods.
Officials also expect improved parking access to increase visits to waterfront businesses. As development continues, the parking strategy will evolve alongside new projects and permanent infrastructure.

Why This Matters: The FIFA World Cup Factor
Bellingham’s selection as an official FIFA World Cup 2026 fan zone creates a temporary but high-intensity surge in regional traffic. The city plans to show all six Seattle-hosted matches locally, including a Team USA match on June 19. Furthermore, the fan zone designation positions Bellingham as a home base between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., pulling regional and international visitors well beyond Whatcom County.
The Downtown Waterfront sits at the center of that plan. Waypoint Park, the Portal Container Village, and the Granary Building businesses make it a natural activation zone during match days. As a result, the Port is not simply planning for more visitors. It is planning for compressed demand spikes when crowds arrive earlier, stay longer, and move in larger groups than a typical summer weekend.
Preemptive Capacity Planning for a Known Demand Window
The Granary Lot expansion reflects three overlapping pressures. Normal seasonal summer demand already pushes the lot to capacity. Additionally, the waterfront is still in a transitional phase between temporary and permanent infrastructure. On top of both, FIFA fan zone activation creates episodic but extreme spikes on specific match days.
In practice, that means peak parking saturation earlier in the day, longer dwell times as people stay for full match windows, increased pedestrian congestion along the waterfront loop, and spillover pressure on nearby Port-controlled areas. ADA access and event logistics zones face additional strain during those periods.
The Port is effectively pre-loading capacity before the surge arrives. A relatively modest addition of 109 spaces is therefore less about everyday convenience and more about preemptive infrastructure planning for a known and finite demand window in 2026.
