ANACORTES, Wash. — Labor Day weekend traffic will still be busy, but drivers on State Route 20 have one less obstacle to deal with. All lanes at Campbell Lake Road reopened Friday after several weeks of construction reduced traffic to a single lane.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said crews restored SR 20 to its usual configuration at Campbell Lake Road Friday.
However, drivers should still slow down through the area. WSDOT set a temporary 40 mph speed limit after crews removed the banking on a curve to level the roadway for construction of a new roundabout.
Roundabout construction continues in 2027
The lane reopening marks the end of the current traffic disruption, but more work remains. WSDOT is working with the Samish Indian Nation and Skagit County to build a roundabout at the intersection.
The $3 million project will continue through fall 2027.
During the recent construction, crews brought the intersection up to grade for the future roundabout. The roadway will now enter a five- to six-month settlement period before the next phase of work begins in 2027.
Next year, drivers can expect additional traffic restrictions as crews build the roundabout. WSDOT expects up to 54 days of one-way traffic on SR 20 and up to 40 days on Campbell Lake Road.
The project aims to improve safety and access at the three-way intersection. According to WSDOT, about 19,000 vehicles traveled this section of SR 20 each day in 2025.
For now, drivers should watch for the temporary 40 mph speed limit and follow posted signs through the construction area.
