Crews work to repair damage to Hannegan Road after atmospheric river weather events.
BELLINGHAM — While the major landslides taking out US 2 and Mount Baker Highway and other roads throughout the state made headlines, a couple of the bigger washout headaches were the loss of Hannegan Road and Woburn Street in Bellingham.
Woburn Street and Hannegan Road are now fully open to traffic following emergency repairs prompted by severe weather earlier this month, according to the City of Bellingham.

Both roadways were closed after a series of closely timed rain events caused flooding and roadway instability at multiple locations across the city, prompting emergency assessments and underground infrastructure repairs to protect public safety.
Crews completed a critical underground pipe repair on Woburn Street, stabilized the surrounding area, and rebuilt the roadway. The team worked around nearby utilities and restored the full street surface. Woburn Street is now fully paved and open to traffic.
Work on Hannegan Road proved more complex. A damaged culvert sat about 25 feet below the roadway, forcing crews to excavate deeply to reach it. They installed a new culvert and rerouted Baker Creek into the structure to stabilize the area. The city reopened the road temporarily over the holidays, then closed it again to finish paving and restoration.
Hannegan Road is now fully repaved and open in both directions. Normal traffic has resumed.
City crews and partner agencies coordinated emergency repairs at multiple sites and moved quickly despite changing weather. Officials thanked the community for its patience during the closures.
