WHATCOM COUNTY — Time is running out for residents interested in helping shape the future as apart of the Whatcom County Advisory Committee.
The Whatcom County Council is seeking applicants for dozens of upcoming vacancies on its advisory committees. Applications are due by 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
There are petitions and comment sections of social media groups full of folks with ideas on what to do about flooding and other issues facing the county. This is your time to be more than just a keyboard warrior.
County officials say advisory groups play a critical role in guiding policy decisions on a wide range of issues. In total, 20 Council-appointed advisory groups will have openings in the coming year.
Those committees advise the County Council and County Executive on subjects including flood control, climate and natural resources, business and commerce, criminal justice, land use planning, ferry transportation, public health, and social services.
More than 100 volunteers currently serve on advisory boards across the county. Officials say participation ensures county government remains responsive to residents while offering volunteers an opportunity to contribute directly to public policy, build professional connections, and serve their community.
Applicants must:
- Live in Whatcom County
- Meet any specific requirements tied to individual committee positions
Most appointments are for two-, three-, or four-year terms, depending on the board or commission.
A complete list of available positions and application materials is available on the county’s website. Applications may be submitted online or delivered directly to the County Council Office at the Whatcom County Courthouse, 311 Grand Avenue, Suite 105, Bellingham.
County officials encourage residents who want to have a voice in local decision-making to apply before the deadline.
