BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A major traffic change is now in effect on State Route 9 in Whatcom County, with the highway fully closed in both directions between Nooksack and Nugents Corner for bridge repairs.
The Washington State Department of Transportation closed SR 9 at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Klein Ditch bridge near milepost 87. The closure will remain in place for three days, with the highway scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.
WSDOT originally planned to keep traffic moving across the bridge under alternating traffic controls. The agency has now closed the highway completely in both directions so crews can make the repairs.
Detour Required for Through Traffic
Drivers traveling through the area must use a signed detour around the closure.
The detour uses SR 542, Interstate 5, SR 539 and SR 544.
WSDOT advises drivers to add extra time to their trips and expect delays as traffic shifts onto the alternate routes.
Local access remains available on SR 9 north and south of the closure. However, drivers cannot use SR 9 to travel through the closed section.
The bridge sits on the section of SR 9 between Nugents Corner and Nooksack that is part of a larger WSDOT paving and preservation project.
Drivers should follow posted detour signs and check current highway conditions before traveling through the area.
