BLAINE, Wash. — BP released an updated statement Sunday on Saturday morning’s industrial incident at Cherry Point Refinery, confirming three workers sustained injuries and all three have since received treatment and left the hospital.
The update revises earlier reports from the scene, which indicated at least four people required transport for treatment. However, BP’s official statement Sunday morning puts the number at three.
“An incident at the BP Cherry Point Refinery on the morning of Saturday, April 18, led to three people sustaining injuries that required further evaluation at a local hospital,” BP said. “These individuals were treated and released. All other staff are accounted for.”
Meanwhile, witnesses at the refinery and nearby Birch Bay residents heard an explosion around 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Whatcom County Fire and EMS crews arrived at 10:25 a.m. and helped transport the injured workers. BP also evacuated employees from the facility as a precaution following the incident.
No Community Risk — Investigation Underway
BP says the incident was fully contained Saturday morning and at no point threatened the surrounding community.
“The incident was contained that morning and did not pose a risk to the surrounding community,” the company said. “Our primary concern remains the well-being of these individuals, along with the safety of our workforce and the community.”
The company says investigators are now working to determine the cause. “We are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident,” BP said. No timeline for results or additional details about the nature of the incident has been released.
