Why Refineries Use Flares
Refineries use flare systems to safely burn excess gases during certain operations. Facilities may flare during maintenance, equipment issues, startup procedures or other process changes.
Large flares can produce bright flames and loud roaring sounds. Under the right weather conditions, people can see them from many miles away.
Residents Report Activity Across Region
Residents from several communities reported seeing the flare overnight. Some described a bright orange glow above Cherry Point. Others said the light illuminated parts of the northern sky.
The BP Cherry Point refinery sits west of Ferndale along the Strait of Georgia shoreline. Because of its location, people often spot large flares from coastal communities throughout Whatcom County and southern British Columbia.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our neighbors,” the BP Cherry Point Refinery Spokesperson said.
BP said the flaring was continuing as of mid-morning. PNW Daily will update this story if the company provides more information.
