What drivers should know
Washington State Patrol reminds motorists that fleeing from law enforcement greatly increases the risk of serious injury or death. The danger affects the fleeing driver and everyone else on the road.
When a driver flees police and causes a crash, insurance liability often falls primarily on that driver. In some cases, the fleeing driver may carry full responsibility.
Washington law may still require insurers to cover damages caused by their policyholder, even during criminal activity. Still, fleeing police often complicates claims. Insurers may dispute coverage, reach policy limits quickly, or deny optional benefits.
Drivers injured in crashes involving a fleeing suspect have several paths to seek compensation. These options include the at-fault driver’s liability coverage, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, or a civil injury claim when damages exceed policy limits.
Fleeing drivers also face personal financial risk beyond insurance coverage. Criminal charges for eluding or reckless driving can strengthen civil claims and weaken legal defenses.
Troopers urge drivers to pull over safely when signaled and address violations through the courts rather than risking lives.
