SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol is asking the public to report suspected police impersonators operating in the Skagit Valley.
WSP issued the request Tuesday, urging anyone who encounters a suspected police impersonator on state highways to share information with investigators.
The agency identified a Crown Victoria with push bars as an example of a vehicle associated with the report. WSP did not provide additional details about specific incidents or detail any possible suspects in its announcement.
Washington Law Prohibits Impersonating Police Officers
Washington law prohibits falsely identifying oneself as a peace officer or creating the impression of being one while acting in a manner intended to suggest official authority.
Under RCW 9A.60.047, a person may violate the law by using a vehicle, clothing or an item displaying a law enforcement agency insignia to create the impression that they are acting in an official capacity.
WSP said witnesses should contact Trooper Ryan Thomas by email at ryan.thomas@wsp.wa.gov.
Anyone who believes they are being stopped by a suspicious vehicle should prioritize their safety. When possible, contact 911 to verify the stop and report the vehicle’s location and description.
