BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Maple Falls man faces an attempted second-degree murder charge after allegedly striking another person repeatedly in the head with a glass bottle during an argument over Wi-Fi, prompting a lengthy standoff with Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies Saturday, Oct. 17.
Kyle William Brown, 42, was arrested after deputies deployed an armored vehicle and tactical equipment, repeatedly ordered him to surrender over a loudspeaker and ultimately forced entry into a residence in the 7700 block of Maple Drive, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and PNW Daily’s live coverage at the scene.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m., when someone living on the property called 911 to report that another resident had struck a person in the head and threatened to kill them, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The victim suffered what appeared to be significant, life-threatening head injuries, and emergency responders transported the victim to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

Deputies Attempt to Get Suspect to Surrender
PNW Daily watched as multiple law enforcement units arrived at the property, including the Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle unit. Deputies in tactical gear took positions outside the residence as the response escalated.
Using a loudspeaker, deputies repeatedly announced that they had a warrant and ordered Brown to come outside.
“Please, come out Kyle. We have a warrant, we know you’re in there and we’re not leaving. We do not want to damage your home, please come outside,” deputies announced.
The Sheriff’s Office said Brown remained inside the residence and ignored deputies’ commands to leave the house and surrender.
PNW Daily broadcast the standoff live on Facebook and TikTok as the law enforcement response continued for more than an hour. Deputies eventually deployed flash-bang devices and forced entry into the residence.

Argument Over Wi-Fi Allegedly Preceded Attack
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the person who called 911 reported that an argument over Wi-Fi preceded the alleged assault.
The caller said Brown repeatedly struck the victim in the head with a glass bottle before arming himself with a machete. Brown lived in a residence on the property, while the victim and the person who intervened and called 911 lived in a trailer on the property, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The agency has not provided additional details about the victim’s condition following transport to the hospital.
