NUGENTS CORNER, Wash. — Drivers traveling through Nugents Corner should expect delays Monday as crews finish paving work on State Route 9 near the SR 9/SR 542 roundabout.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said crews will grind and pave north of the roundabout Monday, Aug. 31. Flaggers and pilot vehicles will alternate traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
WSDOT North warned travelers to expect backups on SR 9 and SR 542 until the paving work is complete around 6 p.m.
The work is part of a $6 million project to improve pavement along four sections of SR 9 and SR 547 in Whatcom County.
Where the paving project is happening
The project includes four sections of highway:
- SR 9 from Park Road to north of Doran Road, between mileposts 68 and 69 near the Whatcom-Skagit County line.
- SR 9 from Nugents Corner to south of South Pass Road, between mileposts 84 and 90.
- SR 9 from the Nooksack Road/SR 546 intersection to north of Bowens Street, between mileposts 94 and 97 south of Sumas.
- SR 547 from Saar Creek to the Sumas River, between mileposts 9 and 10 east of Sumas.
Crews are grinding away existing pavement, sealing cracks, placing new asphalt and installing new pavement markings.
Some sections of the highway were last paved in 1998.
Bridge work also affecting SR 9
Drivers should also be aware of separate bridge work on SR 9 south of Hopewell Road.
Northbound and southbound traffic will alternate around the clock on a bridge over Klein Creek at milepost 87 while crews inspect the bridge deck.
WSDOT said the alternating traffic will continue until further notice.
The paving project began June 15 and was scheduled to continue through late August. Construction generally takes place from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, although Sunday work is limited.
Drivers traveling through active work zones should plan for delays and allow additional time for their trips.
