WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Drivers in eastern Whatcom County should expect delays this week as the Washington State Department of Transportation continues paving work on State Route 9 and State Route 547.
WSDOT North announced that crews will alternate traffic on both highways through Thursday, June 25.
SR 547 Work Continues Near Sumas
Crews will pave SR 547 between Saar Creek and the Sumas River, near mileposts 9 and 10.
Flaggers will alternate traffic from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 22-25. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time.

SR 9 Bridge Traffic Alternates Around the Clock
Traffic also continues to alternate across the Klein Ditch Bridge on SR 9 near milepost 87, south of Hopewell Road.
WSDOT crews placed the restriction in effect while inspectors evaluate the bridge deck. The agency expects northbound and southbound traffic to share a single lane until further notice.
The bridge sits between Nugents Corner and Sumas and serves as a key route for local residents and agricultural traffic.

Paving Project Started Earlier This Month
WSDOT launched the paving project June 15 on SR 9 between Nugents Corner and Sumas. Crews worked on a six-mile stretch between mileposts 84 and 90.
The project also includes pavement improvements on SR 547. WSDOT says the work will improve road conditions on both highways.
Drivers should slow down, follow posted signs and watch for workers and equipment in the construction zone.
