BELLINGHAM, Wash. — After more than 26 years serving the community, Bellingham Fire Department Captain Brian Jones has retired, closing a career that began with a volunteer position and evolved into more than two decades of leadership within the department.
The Bellingham Fire Department announced Jones’ retirement Monday, recognizing his service, leadership and dedication to the city and fellow firefighters.
Jones, originally from Tacoma, moved to Bellingham to attend Western Washington University, where he earned a degree in plastics engineering. While attending college, he volunteered with Whatcom County Fire District 2 in the Geneva and Sudden Valley areas while completing an engineering internship.
What began as a way to spend his free time quickly became a career path.
According to the department, firefighters Jones met during his volunteer service encouraged him to pursue the profession. In September 1999, he joined the Bellingham Fire Department, choosing a firefighting career over several engineering opportunities.

Leadership Within the Department
Jones became actively involved with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 106 early in his career. He served as a trustee and later joined the union’s contract negotiation team, remaining involved in labor discussions for much of his career.
The department said his commitment extended beyond emergency response and included advocacy for firefighters and efforts to support the profession.
Jones was promoted to fire captain after five years with the department. He spent the next 21 years leading crews, mentoring younger firefighters and responding to emergencies throughout Bellingham.
Fire department officials described him as a respected leader and trusted member of the organization.

A Career of Community Service
Throughout his career, Jones helped guide firefighters through emergency incidents while serving residents across the city. His tenure spanned more than two decades of growth and change within the department.
The department thanked Jones for his professionalism, integrity and dedication to public service.
Looking Ahead to Retirement
As he begins retirement, Jones plans to spend more time with his wife and son, complete long-awaited projects and continue one of his favorite hobbies — finding and repairing discarded items others leave behind.

The Bellingham Fire Department congratulated Jones on his retirement and thanked him for more than 26 years of service to the community.
“Thank you for your 26-plus years of service, leadership and commitment to our department and community,” the department said in its announcement.
