AUBURN, Wash. — More than a month after a three-vehicle crash on State Route 18 in Auburn, the Washington State Patrol has released its investigation into what it classifies as a delayed fatality collision, revealing that a 62-year-old Kent motorcyclist died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The collision happened about 4:06 p.m. May 31 on eastbound SR 18 near C Street at milepost 3. According to investigators, the motorcyclist was traveling in the left of two eastbound lanes when he attempted to change lanes. The motorcycle struck the rear of one vehicle before colliding with the side of another, sending all three vehicles to a stop across the highway. The crash blocked both eastbound lanes for approximately one hour while first responders treated those involved and cleared the scene.
Investigation Details Released
The Washington State Patrol identified the rider as Kelly J. Woolery, 62, of Kent. He was transported to Kindred Hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Troopers noted Woolery was wearing a helmet, but the report states it was not compliant with U.S. Department of Transportation standards.
The other vehicles involved were a 2025 Ford E-450 driven by a 36-year-old Spokane man and a 2027 Kia Telluride driven by an 86-year-old Brush Prairie man. Neither driver suffered injuries, and both were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol.
Speed Determined To Be Cause
Following its investigation, the State Patrol determined speed caused the collision. Investigators found no indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. The report lists one fatality, no other injuries and three vehicles involved, including the motorcycle.
The motorcycle, a 1979 Harley-Davidson FXEF1200, was towed from the scene. The Ford E-450, Toyota Prius and Kia Telluride all sustained reportable damage.
