FERNDALE, Wash. — A 41-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday evening after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Slater Road and Elder Road near Ferndale, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the crash shortly before 6 p.m. June 23 at the busy intersection near a gas station.
According to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Deb Slater, Zachary Bass was riding westbound on Slater Road at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.
Truck Driver Turned Into Gas Station
Investigators said the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Slater Road and began turning left into the gas station at the intersection.
The truck driver saw the approaching motorcycle but believed it was still a considerable distance away, Slater said. As the truck completed the turn, Bass’ motorcycle struck the vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes. However, Bass died at the scene from his injuries.

No Charges Expected
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators do not expect to file criminal charges against the truck driver in connection with the crash.
