LACEY, Wash. — Agents from the U.S. Border Patrol’s Blaine Sector arrested a man in Thurston County this week after officials say he tried to escape by striking government vehicles and fleeing on foot.
Border Patrol agents working with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers arrested Gerardo De La Luz-Calihua on March 3 in Lacey.
Federal officials said De La Luz-Calihua rammed government vehicles during the encounter and then ran from agents. Officers quickly caught him and took him into custody.
Authorities say he has a prior arrest for assault.
Officials placed De La Luz-Calihua into removal proceedings following the arrest.
Arrest Occurred Far From The Canadian Border
Although the arrest happened in Thurston County near Olympia, the agents involved work for the Blaine Sector. The sector covers Washington and Oregon.
The Blaine Sector headquarters sits near the U.S.–Canada border in Whatcom County. Agents regularly assist federal partners during operations across the region.
The arrest also comes as federal immigration arrest updates in Whatcom County have slowed in recent days after several weeks of regular announcements tied to enforcement operations in northwest Washington.
Federal immigration arrest announcements in Whatcom County had gone quiet this week after several weeks of steady enforcement updates from the region. As PNW Daily reported, however, that did not mean enforcement efforts had stopped.
