SKYKOMISH — It’s a New Year’s Eve surprise for Stevens Pass Resort skiers and snowboarders as the Washington Department of Transportation announced the west side access to US 2 Reopening to the ski area several days early.
US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass (MP 50–64) will reopen at 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, ahead of previous projections.
Ringing in the new year with some good news: US 2 Stevens Pass is open! Eastbound access from Skykomish has been restored and daytime pilot car operations remain in place on the east side of the summit. Please be responsible and be prepared for winter travel. @wspd6piopic.twitter.com/zERPW4PugT
A pilot car will remain in place for a 5-mile stretch east of the summit (MP 66–71), operating daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Drivers are strongly advised not to use US 2 Reopening for cross-state travel while restrictions and the Chumstick Highway detour remain in effect. Alternative east-west routes include I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass, US 97 at Blewett Pass, and SR 28 through Quincy.
Over the past several days, crews benefited from unseasonably good weather, which allowed emergency contractors to finish clearing debris and repairing two washouts at milepost 54, just east of Skykomish.
Travelers are reminded to follow pilot car instructions for safety.
They say don't bury the lede: US 2 Stevens Pass is scheduled to reopen at Skykomish 6AM, Jan 1. On the east side of Stevens, we still have pilot car operations 6AM-6PM. Chumstick Highway is the detour for US 2 Tumwater Canyon to Coles Corner. @wspd6piopic.twitter.com/6SimVzbHXI
