SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — Search and rescue crews from multiple agencies are searching for a 78-year-old man who went missing while hiking the Sauk Mountain Trail in Skagit County Thursday.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office said crews resumed the search Friday, Sept. 18, after Peter Kalapaca disappeared after reaching an area near the top of the Sauk Mountain Trail.
The sheriff’s office said Kalapaca last appeared around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. He carried limited food and water and did not have the supplies needed to remain in the area overnight.
Crews conducted extensive ground and air searches Thursday evening but could not find him.
Missing Hiker Description
Kalapaca is approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds.
He wore a yellow shirt, yellow hat and blue jeans when he disappeared.
The sheriff’s office released a recent photo of the man and said he wore the same yellow hat when he went missing.
Search Resumes Friday
Search crews resumed operations Friday with help from several agencies.
The National Park Service, U.S. Border Patrol and search and rescue teams from neighboring counties joined the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office in the effort.
The sheriff’s office identified the case as 26-11396.

The search remains active.
