BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Those summer projects may have wrapped up a few weekends ago, but if you’ve still got leftover paint and other materials, a free disposal event is coming up to help you get rid of them responsibly.
Whatcom County residents and businesses can dispose of unwanted household paint for free during a one-day Paint Collection & Recycling Event on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Barkley Village in Bellingham.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2211 Rimland Drive and welcomes the public. Organizers say the event offers a convenient way to keep unwanted paint out of the waste stream while recycling usable materials.
At a similar paint collection event in Lynden in May, staff accepted more than 97,000 pounds of paint and paint products for recycling.
What Paint Can You Recycle?
Residents and businesses can bring a variety of paint and coating products, including:
- Latex and oil-based paints
- Acrylic paints
- Urethanes
- Varnishes, shellacs and lacquers
- Primers and clear coatings
Bring all products in their original containers, with each container holding 5 gallons or less. Participants can bring as many containers as they like.
You do not need to dry out the paint before drop-off.
The recycling process will turn usable paint into new latex paint.
Paint Products Not Accepted
The collection event will not accept:
- Spray paint
- Marine paint
- Automotive paint
- Electronics
- Household hazardous waste
- Paint thinner
- Driveway sealers
Organizers ask attendees to remain in their vehicles when they arrive. Event staff will direct traffic and unload the materials to help keep the process safe and efficient.
