BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A day at the beach turned into tragedy for a Whatcom County family after 6-year-old Killian Gonzales suffered fatal injuries in a driftwood accident at Little Squalicum Beach.

Killian died Sunday, July 12, after spending four days in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The accident happened July 8 when a large driftwood log shifted as he played near a driftwood fort along the shoreline.
Emergency responders performed CPR for about 20 minutes before restoring his pulse. Medics took him to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham. A medical helicopter later flew him to Harborview for specialized pediatric trauma care.
“We’re living through unimaginable grief. Killian was such a bright light. He had this infectious, deep belly laugh that made everyone around him smile.”
Doctors Battled Severe Injuries
Physicians treated Killian for multiple skull fractures, a broken nose and a tension pneumothorax that collapsed his left lung, according to updates shared by his family.
Surgeons performed emergency brain surgery on July 9. They removed part of his skull to relieve swelling. They also placed a drain to reduce pressure around his brain.
Later updates offered cautious hope. His lungs improved. His pupils remained reactive. Brain activity also continued on EEG monitoring.
Meanwhile, doctors warned that swelling inside his brain remained the greatest threat during the first 72 hours after the accident.
Killian stayed in Harborview’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit while doctors closely monitored his condition. Despite those efforts, he died Sunday afternoon.
Community Stands Behind the Family
Support poured in from across Whatcom County as friends and strangers followed the family’s updates.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $48,800 toward a $50,000 goal as of July 13. The money will help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, travel costs and other family needs.
The family thanked everyone who offered prayers, donations and messages of encouragement during Killian’s fight.
“He loved to adventure outside and all the little creatures he would find there,” the family wrote. “He was curious about everything and loved to learn. He loved to give hugs and always made sure to include everyone around him so they didn’t feel left out.”
They also thanked supporters for helping them through an unimaginable loss.
“Thank you to everyone who has donated so we can take time to grieve and figure out how life works now,” the family wrote. “Thank you for caring about my baby boy.”
Driftwood Can Shift Without Warning
Little Squalicum Beach attracts visitors throughout the year with its shoreline lined by massive driftwood logs.
However, those logs can become unstable as tides change or the sand beneath them erodes. Even logs that appear secure can suddenly roll or shift under their own weight.
Killian’s death is a heartbreaking reminder that driftwood structures can pose serious dangers, especially for children exploring or climbing on them.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Killian’s family.
