BLAINE, Wash. — A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and injured an armed suspect Tuesday morning during an encounter near the Canadian border in Blaine, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott said the incident occurred in the area of Fourth Street and A Street.
“On the morning of June 16, 2026, a U.S. Border Patrol agent discharged his service weapon during an encounter with a subject in Blaine, Washington, near the Canadian border,” Scott said in a statement.
The suspect survived the shooting and received medical treatment.
“The subject was injured and received medical treatment. The Border Patrol agent was not injured. A firearm was recovered at the scene,” Scott said.
Authorities have not identified the suspect or released details about what led to the encounter.
Blaine Police Responded to “Shots Fired” Call
Deputy Chief Brent Greene said Blaine police received a report of “shots fired” at 5:29 a.m.
One Blaine police officer responded to the scene and assisted with scene security.
Greene said Blaine officers did not provide medical aid, discharge weapons, use force or detain anyone during the incident.
“We are assisting with scene security,” Greene said.
He also said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
FBI Leads Investigation
Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Blaine Police Department, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the FBI.
According to CBP, the FBI is leading the criminal investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting a separate review of the agent’s use of force.
Greene said Blaine police have not yet provided reports, body camera footage or witness statements to federal investigators.
He referred questions about potential witnesses or requests for public information to the FBI.
Residents Impacted by Crime Scene
The investigation shut down access to several nearby properties Tuesday morning.
A resident on 4th Street told PNW Daily that investigators established part of the crime scene in her driveway.
“What I can tell you, is the suspect went down IN my driveway,” she said.
The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she could not leave for work and her son could not attend school because investigators restricted access to the property.
“I cannot leave for work and my son could not go to school this morning because our yard and driveway are a crime scene per Blaine Police Department and Border Patrol,” she said.
She said the restrictions affected multiple residents in the neighborhood.
“We are not the only people blocked in,” she said. “There are others further down and an apartment complex across the street also affected.”
Despite the disruption, she praised the response from law enforcement.
“It is what it is,” she said. “Grateful for the quick response and actions of Border Patrol and the Blaine Police Department.”
Investigation Continues
Federal investigators have not released information about the suspect’s identity, the circumstances that led to the shooting, or the condition of the injured individual.
The FBI continues to lead the investigation. PNW Daily will update this story as additional information becomes available.
