BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Visitors can once again drive all the way to Artist Point after state crews reopened the final stretch of the Mount Baker Highway on Wednesday.
The Washington State Department of Transportation announced June 10 that the final 2.7-mile section of SR 542 has reopened to recreational traffic, restoring full vehicle access to one of Washington’s most popular alpine destinations.
Artist Point Open for Summer
WSDOT North announced the reopening Wednesday afternoon after crews completed snow removal, road repairs, striping, and other seasonal maintenance work.
“And we are open!” the agency posted on social media. “The final 2.7-mile stretch of SR 542/Mount Baker Highway is now ready for recreational traffic.”
The reopening gives travelers access to Artist Point, a high-elevation destination known for its views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan.
Crews Battled Deep Snow
The opening caps weeks of work by WSDOT maintenance crews, who spent the spring clearing deep snow from the highway. Earlier this month, the agency reported snowbanks reaching about 20 feet deep near Artist Point.
Workers also removed debris, installed signs, and striped the roadway before opening the route. The upper section of SR 542 closes every winter because of heavy snowfall and avalanche hazards.
Expect Ongoing Maintenance
While the road is now open, WSDOT advised visitors to plan ahead and watch for workers along the route. State maintenance crews and U.S. Forest Service personnel will continue working on and near the highway throughout the summer season. Drivers should expect to encounter occasional work zones as crews maintain the corridor.
The reopening comes just ahead of one of the busiest periods of the year for Mount Baker recreation, with hikers, photographers, campers, and sightseers expected to flock to Artist Point over the coming weeks.
