A 62-year-old Ferndale man died and another driver suffered injuries in a head-on crash Saturday on Mount Baker Highway near Deming, according to WSP. (Trooper Kelsey Harding)
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A 62-year-old Ferndale man died Saturday morning after a head-on collision on the Mount Baker Highway near Deming, according to the Washington State Patrol.

How the Crash Happened
Troopers responded to the fatal crash around 10:37 a.m. May 16 near milepost 19 on State Route 542, north of Welcome and near Bell Creek Road.
According to the WSP press memo, Allen W. York, 62, of Ferndale, drove westbound on SR 542 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle head-on.
York died at the scene. Troopers confirmed he wore a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the second vehicle, Jayde F. Laux, 27, of Maple Falls, suffered injuries. Emergency crews transported him to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham. Troopers also confirmed Laux wore a seatbelt.
Investigation Ongoing
Both vehicles came to rest perpendicular to the roadway and fully blocked both lanes of SR 542 for several hours while investigators documented the scene and crews removed debris.
Troopers said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the collision. The crash involved a 2009 Mazda 3 and a 1992 Toyota 4Runner. Both vehicles totaled. Investigators continue working to determine the cause.
