Hundreds of Bellingham families turned out for Yeager's annual Family Fishing Day on April 11. PNW Daily broadcast live on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram with fishing legend Westy on hand.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Hundreds of families packed Yeager’s Sporting Goods on Saturday for the store’s annual Family Fishing Day, and the crowd that showed up proved the tradition is as strong as ever. Kids clutched fishing rods, parents lined up for casting lessons, and one beloved face from the old fishing department made sure no goodie bag went unclaimed.
PNW Daily was on-site all day, broadcasting live across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram and bringing the event to viewers across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Westy Shows Up For the Kids
The moment that sparked the more than 25,000 likes during the livestream was the appearance of John “Westy” Westerfield, the retired Yeager’s fishing department legend. Westy came out to personally hand the goodie bags to the kids, one by one, and did not leave until the very last one was gone. Yeager’s had planned to give away 45.
Let’s just say the shopping cart may have had a few extras tucked in before the day was done.
Viewers watching the live broadcast caught it in real time.
“I see Westy!!!!” Heidi Conrad wrote in the comments, and she was not the only one who recognized him.
The Numbers
The campaign reached well beyond the store walls. Pre-event videos drove 30,019 views on Facebook, 24,513 on Instagram, and 15,376 on TikTok.
During the live coverage, notably, 15 percent of the audience was Canadian. That cross-border reach was exactly what the campaign set out to deliver, connecting Yeager’s with outdoor enthusiasts north of the border who make the drive down for gear and experiences they cannot find at home.
The TikTok live performance outpaced 88 percent of creators with similar audiences, according to platform analytics.
Good for you for making community journalism work for both readers and advertisers. Not an easy feat these days.

Community Journalism That Works
The response from the community said it best. “A new level of community journalism,” Ray Cushing wrote on a separate post.
Tyler Rauch kept it simple: “Yeager’s is awesome!”
That is the point. Family Fishing Day is not just a store event. It is a tradition that connects generations of Whatcom County families to the outdoors, and PNW Daily was proud to be part of it. Yeager’s has been doing this since 1921. With Westy still showing up to hand out bags to the kids, some things do not change.
Thank you to Yeager’s Sporting Goods for partnering with PNW Daily, and thank you to everyone who came out, tuned in, and made the day what it was.
This coverage was produced as part of a paid partnership with Yeager’s Sporting Goods. All editorial content reflects PNW Daily’s independent reporting.

PNW Daily’s appearance had two days of pre-promotion, rather than the typical 1-2 weeks, but we still had a packed event with happy customers, fans and client! contact@pnwdaily.com
