Creydt, Swinburnson Lead Whatcom County Primary Results

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Republican Erika Creydt leads the primary for the 42nd Legislative District’s open state Senate seat Tuesday night, while Ryan Swinburnson held a commanding advantage in the four-way race for Whatcom County prosecuting attorney.

Creydt received 13,617 votes, or 46.02%, in the first unofficial count released after polls closed in Washington’s Aug. 4 primary election. Democrats Michael Alvarez Shepard and Eamonn Collins remained locked in a close contest for the second general election position.

Alvarez Shepard held second place with 7,996 votes, or 27.02%. Collins followed with 7,234 votes, or 24.45%, leaving 762 votes between the two Democrats. Ryan Bowman, who states no party preference, received 723 votes, or 2.44%.

Whatcom County’s Tuesday night figures are “unofficial election results.” Election officials will continue processing ballots before certifying the election Aug. 18.

Swinburnson Leads Prosecutor Primary

Swinburnson, who states no party preference, led the race for prosecuting attorney with 16,299 votes, or 39.48%.

Democrat Jesse Corkern held second place with 8,938 votes, or 21.65%. Democrats Dona Bracke and Erik Sigmar remained close behind, with Bracke receiving 8,249 votes, or 19.98%, and Sigmar collecting 7,745 votes, or 18.76%.

Corkern led Bracke by 689 votes in the contest for the second general election position. Sigmar trailed Corkern by 1,193 votes.

Under Washington’s top-two primary system, the two candidates receiving the most votes advance to the November general election regardless of party preference.

Rule and Timmons Lead House Races

Democratic state Rep. Alicia Rule led Republican Misty Flowers in the 42nd Legislative District Position 1 race.

Rule received 16,209 votes, or 54.70%, while Flowers received 13,360 votes, or 45.08%. Both candidates will advance because only two names appeared on the ballot.

In the district’s Position 2 race, Democratic state Rep. Joe Timmons received 15,590 votes, or 52.53%. Republican Justin Pike followed with 14,046 votes, or 47.33%. Both will also advance to November.

Larsen and Feller Lead Whatcom County Vote

Lekanoff and Ramel Lead Whatcom Vote in 40th District

Democratic incumbents Debra Lekanoff and Alex Ramel established commanding leads in both 40th Legislative District House races Tuesday night.

Lekanoff captured more than 72% of the districtwide vote in the Position 1 contest. Republican Cindy Carter received nearly 28%. With only two candidates in the race, both will advance to the November general election.

Ramel secured more than 68% in the four-way Position 2 primary. Joseph Segault, who states no party preference, held a distant second with approximately 13%.

Independent candidates Salomon Rodrigue Mbouombouo and Monte Jay Mahan divided the remaining votes. If the initial standings hold, Ramel and Segault will face each other in November.

Burrill and Elder Lead Port Primaries

Paul Burrill led the six-candidate Port of Bellingham Commissioner District 4 primary with 2,566 votes, or 30.73%.

Tor Benson held second with 2,060 votes, or 24.67%. Samantha Cruz-Mendoza followed with 1,517 votes, or 18.17%.

Tim Chartier received 963 votes, Jaden McConnell received 732 and Dean Berkeley received 480.

In Port Commissioner District 5, Chris Elder held a substantial lead with 3,006 votes, or 40.67%.

Shawn Ensley was second with 1,612 votes, or 21.81%, followed by Todd Lagestee with 1,315 votes, or 17.79%. Jerry Burns received 571 votes, Spenser R. New received 475 and Randall Wood received 366.

Initial Supreme Court Results in Whatcom County

Colleen Melody led the Whatcom County vote for state Supreme Court Position 1 with 21,589 votes, or 53.53%. Scott Edwards followed with 10,701 votes, or 26.53%, while Laura Christensen Colberg received 7,984 votes, or 19.80%.

David Stevens led the local count for Position 3 with 15,177 votes, or 37.77%. Jaime Michelle Hawk received 13,655 votes, or 33.98%, while Mike Diaz received 11,271 votes, or 28.05%.

Position 5 produced a close contest between Dave Larson and Theo Angelis. Larson received 14,471 votes, or 36.05%, while Angelis received 14,266 votes, or 35.54%, a difference of 205 votes. Sharonda Amamilo received 7,952 votes, while Greg Miller received 3,393.

Justice Debra L. Stephens led the Position 7 vote in Whatcom County with 20,380 votes, or 51.26%. Todd A. Bloom followed with 13,030 votes, or 32.77%.

These figures represent votes reported by Whatcom County rather than complete statewide totals.

Fire Levy Results Split

Whatcom County Fire Protection District 1’s property tax levy lid lift was failing in the initial count. The measure received 884 approval votes, or 46.58%, compared with 1,014 rejection votes, or 53.42%.

Glacier Fire and Rescue’s property tax levy was passing with 71 yes votes, or 69.61%. The measure received 31 no votes.

Fire Protection District 21’s regular property tax levy held a narrower lead. The proposal received 3,800 yes votes, or 52.05%, compared with 3,501 no votes, or 47.95%.

No votes had been reported Tuesday night for Hospital District 304 Proposition 1.

Turnout Reaches 25%

The county’s election dashboard reported 42,746 ballots cast among 170,159 registered voters, producing turnout of approximately 25%.

Election workers will continue processing ballots through Aug. 17. A manual hand count is scheduled for Aug. 6, followed by additional compliance and risk-limiting audits. The Whatcom County Canvassing Board is scheduled to certify the results at 10 a.m. Aug. 18.
