WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — U.S. Border Patrol Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents arrested two Mexican nationals in Whatcom County on Monday, according to the agency’s Blaine Sector chief.
In separate announcements posted Monday, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent for the Blaine Sector reported arrests near Everson and Lynden, with both individuals now being held for removal proceedings.
The first arrest occurred near Everson. Border Patrol officials said agents arrested a Mexican national who is currently being held pending immigration removal proceedings.
Shortly after 1 p.m. a short while later, the agency announced a second arrest near Lynden.
According to Border Patrol, agents arrested a Mexican national who had a previous arrest for driving under the influence. Officials said the individual is also being held for removal proceedings.
The agency did not release the names of either individual, nor did it provide details about when they entered the United States or the circumstances that led to the arrests.
The arrests come as federal immigration enforcement activity remains elevated across the Pacific Northwest. Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division, and other federal agencies have increased enforcement operations throughout the region in recent months.
Federal officials routinely conduct immigration enforcement actions in Whatcom County due to its proximity to the Canadian border. The Blaine Sector is responsible for securing approximately 300 miles of the U.S.-Canada border across Washington state.
Border Patrol did not indicate whether either arrest was connected to any broader enforcement operation.
