BELLINGHAM, Wash. — State fisheries managers say anglers hoping to fish spring Chinook on the North Fork Nooksack may not have to wait much longer, but wanted to clarify the fishery is still pending federal approval.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed this week that the proposed spring king salmon fishery, along with other salmon fisheries proposed for the 2026-2027 season, is pending final federal sign-off from NOAA Fisheries. An announcement is expected imminently for the anticipated May 23 opener on the Nooksack previously confirmed by WDFW Police.
Chase Gunnell, WDFW Communications Manager for the North Sound, contacted PNW Daily following our earlier coverage of the proposed fishery.
“That and other proposed salmon fisheries are still waiting on federal approval from NOAA Fisheries,” Gunnell said. “WDFW hopes to have updates out later today or tomorrow, shortly followed by the official Fishing Rule Changes that authorize these fisheries.”
Where to Find the Official Rules
Once approved, WDFW will distribute official rule changes via email and social media. The agency will also post them to the emergency rules page at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/emergency-rules.
The full summary of state and tribal co-manager proposals for the 2026-2027 season is available at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/management/north-falcon/summaries.
PNW Daily will update you as soon as WDFW releases final authorization. In the meantime, anglers should check the emergency rules page before heading to the river.
