BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu is again warning employees about possible layoffs as the county faces a growing budget deficit. In an email sent Monday, May 4, Sidhu said the county’s financial outlook is “unsustainable” and will require corrective action as officials begin planning the 2027-2028 budget.
As part of that effort, the county is considering layoffs, schedule adjustments, and broader operational changes. In addition, Sidhu said leaders are reviewing long-term strategies to better align programs and services with available funding, policy obligations, and community priorities.
Context and History
The warning follows a period of relative stability in county staffing.
Whatcom County ended a roughly six-month hiring freeze in February 2025 and has not implemented budget-related layoffs since. Furthermore, Sidhu has issued similar warnings in past budget cycles, often signaling financial strain well ahead of formal budget proposals.
What Comes Next
County officials are expected to provide more detail soon. Specifically, the Executive’s Office will present an update on county finances during the Whatcom County Council meeting on Tuesday, May 12.
