BLAINE, Wash. — A Blaine border crossing arrest occurred March 6 after Border Patrol agents caught a Romanian man trying to enter the United States through the woods between ports of entry.
The Blaine Sector Chief Patrol Agent said agents arrested Mihail Gheorghita on March 6. Agents spotted him moving through a wooded section of border between the Peace Arch crossing and the nearby truck crossing.
Authorities said Gheorghita is a citizen of Romania. He is now in federal custody and awaiting removal proceedings.
The arrest happened in a wooded strip along the U.S.-Canada border just east of Peace Arch Park.
Years ago, several informal trails ran through the area. People sometimes used them to walk through the woods near the border.
Today, Border Patrol closely monitors the corridor.
Agents use cameras, motion sensors, and other detection technology to watch for illegal crossings between official checkpoints.
The Blaine Sector covers Washington state and parts of northern Idaho. Agents regularly patrol the border around Blaine because it sits between two major crossings: the Peace Arch port of entry and the Interstate 5 commercial truck crossing.
Officials did not release additional details about the arrest.
PNW Daily will update this story as news breaks.
