SUMAS — U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Sumas arrested a Venezuelan national who unlawfully entered the United States in 2022 and remained in the country without legal status, according to a post Monday on X.
Agents identified the individual during enforcement activity near the northern border and took the person into custody. Officials said the individual accrued unlawful presence in the United States and now faces federal immigration processing.
Authorities transported the individual to a detention facility, where removal proceedings are expected to continue.
The arrest comes as CBP and Border Patrol increases enforcement activity along Washington’s northern border, particularly within the Blaine Sector, which covers Sumas, Blaine, Lynden and nearby communities.
Northern border enforcement intensifies
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol have expanded patrols and targeted operations in Washington state in recent months. Officials say the effort aims to deter illegal crossings and identify individuals who entered the country outside lawful ports of entry.
Agents in the Blaine Sector have reported multiple arrests tied to illegal entry from Canada. Those arrests often involve individuals who crossed through remote areas along the border.
PNW Daily has previously reported on several Blaine Sector cases involving arrests near the U.S.–Canada border. While unrelated, those cases reflect sustained enforcement activity in the region.
Part of a nationwide effort
The Sumas arrest also aligns with increased immigration enforcement nationwide. Federal authorities have expanded patrols along both the northern and southern borders as migration pressures continue.
While most encounters occur along the southern border, officials say northern border enforcement remains a priority. Agents continue to focus on lightly monitored areas where crossings can occur unnoticed.
Border Patrol officials did not release additional details about the individual, citing ongoing federal processing.
