RENTON, Wash. — San Francisco 49ers fans smell blood in the water Friday after the Seattle Seahawks listed quarterback Sam Darnold as questionable, triggering a wave of online smack talk ahead of Saturday’s NFC West showdown.
Seahawks fans were more focused on who was going to raise the 12th Man Flag before the game. Former Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll was being rumored to hoist the flag by Friday afternoon.
Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald was asked about the injury during his Friday press conference and said he’s “optimistic” Darnold will play. That means of course, Darnold is playing despite the reported oblique issue.
The update did little to slow the momentum of trash talk spreading across X and other platforms.
Darnold left practice earlier Friday after feeling discomfort in his left side. As a surprise to no one later, he told reporters he expects to play.
“We’re listing him as questionable,” Macdonald said. “Right now we’re going through all the protocol just out of caution. We’ll test it out tomorrow and kind of make the final decision, but again, we’re optimistic he’s going to play.”
Macdonald said backup quarterback Drew Lock is prepared if needed.
“If he doesn’t, or at some point he doesn’t, then Drew is ready to go and that’s why Drew’s here,” Macdonald said. “He’s doing a great job.”
Seattle’s mayor also posted Friday in anticipation of the game.
Seahawks fans won’t be alone cheering against the 49ers this weekend, however.
