FERNDALE, Wash. — The City of Ferndale ordered Main Street Bar & Grill to close Oct. 22 after an inspection identified fire and life-safety concerns involving the restaurant’s commercial kitchen.
The city’s unsafe-to-occupy order followed a Sept. 11 inspection by the Whatcom County Health Department and a subsequent city inspection.
Inspectors identified problems with the kitchen’s ventilation hood and fire-suppression system, including modifications that compromised the system’s operation. They also documented heavy grease buildup on kitchen surfaces, equipment, ductwork and gas lines, along with clogged fire-suppression nozzles.
Other findings included a fire extinguisher that did not meet requirements and had not been serviced in more than a year, an unverified gas safety interlock and no apparent connection between the kitchen hood and a fire alarm monitoring system.
The city also identified grease leaking from the roof exhaust duct into a gutter and the stormwater system. The order requires immediate installation of a drip pan to prevent further contamination.
Owner Requested Inspection Oct. 21 Following Earlier Notice
The city issued a notice of correction to the business owner Oct. 14. The owner requested a building inspection Oct. 21, and city officials inspected the property the following day.
The restaurant cannot reopen until the violations are addressed and the required permits, corrective work, inspections and approvals are complete.
The notice identifies Maria and Emmanuel Polychronakis as the responsible party. The order allows an appeal or request for an expedited hearing within 72 hours of posting.
PNW Daily was unable to reach Main Street ownership for comment. Main Street Bar & Grill is located at 2005 Main St.
