WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Whatcom County Public Works will install additional protective fencing along the Birch Bay berm beginning the week of May 18. The work aims to protect shoreline vegetation and reduce erosion risks.
Crews will work Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. between the Beach Cat area and just north of Harborview Road. Additionally, crews may work near Cottonwood Drive.
The fencing protects vegetation along the berm. That vegetation stabilizes the structure and reduces flood risk in Birch Bay. Furthermore the county said, the work supports permit compliance and the long-term effectiveness of the berm system.
County officials are asking the public to avoid walking or driving on fenced portions of the berm and to help preserve the area during the project.
How the Public Can Help
Public Works asks residents and visitors to take several steps to protect the berm during and after construction:
- Stay off fenced areas and the berm crest
- Dispose of trash properly
- Keep vehicles off the berm
- Avoid fires and fireworks
- Do not disturb vegetation
- Leave fencing and warning signs in place
Ongoing Berm Maintenance
The Birch Bay berm has been the focus of ongoing maintenance in recent years. Coastal erosion and storm impacts continue to affect the waterfront community. As a result, county crews have made shoreline protection a regular priority along this stretch of Birch Bay.
Construction activity runs throughout the week of May 18. Temporary work zones will appear along portions of the berm corridor during that time.
