Mount Baker reflects the sunset over Ferndale on Thursday evening. A rare dry, sunny January weekend is expected across the area.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — After weeks of rain and high water, the sunny weekend forecast for Puget Sound includes a dry, sunny, and seasonably mild weekend. It’s a welcome shift for communities still dealing with swollen rivers and saturated ground.
Forecasts call for daytime highs near 50 degrees, overnight lows in the mid-30s, and little to no chance of precipitation through at least Monday. The calm pattern should allow river levels to gradually recede, particularly in lowland and flood-prone areas that have remained elevated following recent storms.
The stretch of clear skies is less typical for midwinter in Western Washington, when cloud cover and frequent rain usually dominate. While the dry weather will not immediately reverse flood impacts, it may help stabilize conditions and reduce runoff into creeks and rivers.
Residents are encouraged to remain cautious near waterways, especially near riverbanks as rivers can remain swift and cold even as water levels slowly fall.
Razor Clam Digs Approved for Jan. 15–21
WDFW has approved razor clam digs on multiple coastal beaches from Jan. 15 through Jan. 21, after marine toxin tests confirmed the clams are safe to eat.
PNW Daily also reported area beaches are open for clamming, so the good weather makes for primetime digging.
