FERNDALE, Wash. — Police arrested a suspect Friday morning after a fatal shooting in Ferndale left one man dead.
The Ferndale Police Department said officers responded around 3:34 a.m. Friday, May 8, to the 2300 block of Ferndale Terrace following reports of a shooting. Before officers arrived, the suspect fled the scene.
First responders transported the victim to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Suspect Located and Arrested in Sandy Point
The arrest began not as a manhunt, but as a suspicious person call.
At approximately 5:52 a.m., Lummi Nation Police Department officers responded to a suspicious person report in the 4700 block of Sucia Drive in Sandy Point. While investigating, surveillance footage from a nearby resident revealed the individual was the suspect in the Ferndale shooting.
LNPD officers, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Bellingham Police Department K-9 and a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter then surrounded the area. Information indicated the suspect may be hiding in a trailer behind a residence off Sucia Drive.
Officers checked the location and safely took the suspect into custody. Authorities transported him to the Ferndale Police Department for further investigation.
“It should also be noted that, LNPD’s new K-9 was able to successfully locate what is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting while searching the area!” LNPD said later.
The Ferndale Police Department thanked assisting agencies for their coordinated response. LNPD credited the collaboration, writing that the arrest “goes to show the continuous collective work being done by LNPD while collaborating with our neighboring agencies.”
Investigation Ongoing
The case remains an active investigation. Police have not released the names of the victim or the suspect, and no additional information was available Friday afternoon.
“Another example of collaborative policing for public safety,” Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department said.
