GUEMES ISLAND, Wash. — The number of deceased dogs recovered along Guemes Island shorelines has now risen to 21 as of Thursday, according to community reports and ongoing response efforts.
Authorities and investigators continue working to document and identify the animals, while a forensic veterinarian is expected to determine whether the canines are domestic dogs or wild animals, as well as establish cause of death.
As the situation develops, concern among residents is escalating.
“Please do not let your dogs outside alone,” Emily Hinkley said in the Anacortes community group. “Stand in the backyard with them every time they go outside and do not let them off a leash unless they are inside. This is as serious as it is heartbreaking.”
Pet Owners Urged To Take Immediate Precautions
Officials and community members are urging pet owners across the area to take extra precautions immediately.

Reports of possible additional carcasses continue to surface, although not all have been confirmed by authorities.
This is so so sad. They’re not just killing them, they’re also skinning them.
