WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A driver is in custody after a wrong-way collision on Interstate 5 near Birch Bay that authorities say resulted in only minor injuries.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding, the crash occurred near milepost 270 on I-5 in Whatcom County.
Investigators say a driver traveled the wrong direction on the interstate before colliding with another vehicle. The impact left one car heavily damaged along the shoulder of the highway.
It appears that an object went through the windshield during the collision.
Despite the severity of the crash, officials said the collision resulted in only minor injuries.
Troopers arrested the suspected wrong-way driver at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the driver’s identity or possible charges.
The crash temporarily disrupted traffic in the Birch Bay area as emergency crews responded and cleared the wreckage.
Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the wrong-way crash.
