FERNDALE, Wash. — Police are investigating after a man was found dead on a remote trail near Kwina Road on the Lummi Reservation Tuesday morning.
The Lummi Nation Police Department received a report around 10:30 a.m. March 10 of a possible deceased person near the 2500 block of Kwina Road.
Officers responded and located a man believed to be in his late 30s lying on the ground. Officers confirmed he was dead at the scene.
Detectives from the Lummi Nation Police Department responded to investigate. The FBI also assisted at the scene.
Authorities later transferred the man’s remains to the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Investigation ongoing
Police have not released the man’s name.
Investigators are working to notify family members before publicly identifying the victim. Officials said they will release the name after completing that process.
Why the FBI responded
Federal agents often assist tribal police during serious investigations on tribal land. Because the Lummi Reservation is sovereign tribal territory, certain crimes may fall under federal jurisdiction depending on the circumstances and the people involved.
The FBI commonly supports tribal departments with forensic resources, investigators, and technical assistance while the case is examined.
The medical examiner’s investigation remains ongoing.
