OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Bob Ferguson signed legislation Tuesday giving Washington state clearer authority to determine which vaccines it recommends for residents.
Ferguson said the law protects Washington from potential shifts in federal policy.
“We are not standing by and leaving ourselves at the mercy of the federal government’s chaotic, politicized, unscientific policies,” Ferguson said. “This law ensures Washington can make science-based decisions about vaccines.”
Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer worked with the governor on the legislation.
Rep. Dan Bronoske and Sen. Annette Cleveland sponsored the bill.
Washington expands state control over vaccine guidance
Under the new law, Washington health officials can determine vaccine recommendations without relying entirely on federal advisory guidance.
Currently, many state vaccine policies follow recommendations from federal health agencies. However, supporters said the change allows Washington to respond more quickly if federal guidance changes.
As a result, state leaders say Washington can maintain vaccine policies based on local medical expertise and research.
In addition, officials say the law protects existing vaccination programs if federal recommendations shift.
Supporters cite public health independence
Supporters say the legislation strengthens Washington’s ability to respond to emerging health threats.
They argue that vaccine decisions should remain grounded in scientific research and public health expertise.
Therefore, they say the law ensures Washington health leaders can maintain consistent vaccine guidance even if national policy changes.
Bill sponsors
Bronoske, a Democrat from Lakewood, sponsored the bill in the House.
Meanwhile, Cleveland, a Democrat from Vancouver, sponsored the companion measure in the Senate.
Ferguson said the legislation reflects Washington’s long-standing reliance on medical science and public health experts.
