SEATTLE — Former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Darrell Taylor was released from the New England Patriots’ practice squad this week, ending a short and quiet stop with the franchise.
The move became public in an unusually blunt exchange with head coach Mike Vrabel. Asked how Taylor had acclimated so far, Vrabel replied: “Uhhhh. Yeah. We released Darrell Taylor. We’ll put that out here at 4:00. So not very well.”
From second-round pick to practice squad
Taylor, 28, entered the NFL as a second-round pick in the 2020 draft after the Seahawks selected him out of Tennessee. Injuries delayed his debut, but he later carved out a rotational role in Seattle’s pass rush.
Across 69 career games, Taylor has recorded 118 tackles, 24.5 sacks, and eight forced fumbles. His most productive stretch came during the 2022 season, when he played a key role in Seattle’s defensive front.
An uncertain next step
After his time with the Seahawks ended, Taylor has bounced between opportunities as teams evaluated him as depth and situational pass rush help. His release from New England suggests the Patriots are moving in a different direction as they head into the AFC Championship Game on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
For Taylor, the next move likely depends on injuries around the league or a team seeking veteran edge depth later in the season. For now, his NFL future remains unsettled following a brief and candidly summarized stint in New England.
The Seahawks play at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at home against division rival Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
