“NB I-5 will remain CLOSED overnight near Bellingham at N Lake Samish Rd due to downed trees, rocks and debris across the road,” Washington Department of Transportation official said before midnight Thursday. “It will remain closed until the stability of the slope can be assessed in the daylight.”
The slide occurred at milepost 249, where large rocks, trees, and debris came down across the roadway, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding.
What Drivers Need To Know
Northbound drivers must exit at North Lake Samish Road (milepost 246) and follow a signed detour.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is on scene working to clear the debris. Officials have not provided an estimated reopening time.
Conditions On Scene
Photos from the scene show large boulders and fallen trees covering multiple lanes, making the roadway impassable.
Crews responded overnight with heavy equipment and lighting to assess the slope and begin clearing operations.
Atmospheric River Driving Flood And Landslide Risk
A strong atmospheric river is pushing steady rainfall into western Washington, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
Forecasters warn that repeated rounds of rain can saturate soil and destabilize hillsides. Those conditions likely contributed to the slide near Bellingham.
Flood watches are in place across parts of western Washington, including Whatcom and Skagit counties. Rivers are rising and could approach flood stage.
Safety Reminder
Drivers should avoid the area if possible and allow extra travel time.
Officials urge drivers not to bypass road closures and to use caution on wet roads, especially in areas prone to slides.
