Residents in Sehome say a mysterious dog owner is leaving large piles of pet waste across the neighborhood, sparking warnings online.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Residents in the Sehome neighborhood say a mysterious dog owner keeps leaving unusually large piles of pet waste across the neighborhood. The situation has prompted warnings for neighbors to watch out for the “Sehome Poop Terrorist.”
The complaints surfaced in a widely shared neighborhood post online. One resident described a growing trail of dog waste across grassy apartment fields, sidewalks, and landscaping throughout the Sehome area.
“For anyone living in the Sehome area by the high school, you’ve probably noticed a lot of extra large pet waste around the whole neighborhood,” the resident posting as Neat Patient wrote. “Many of you have probably witnessed it, and many have probably stepped in it.”
The resident said the mess appears in grassy areas near apartments and the high school. It has also started showing up on sidewalks and landscaping.
“The crimes have not only been committed within the grassy fields of the local apartments and the high school, but they have started to appear on sidewalks and the shrubbery… the shrubbery,” the resident wrote.
Residents describe possible suspect dog
The post jokingly calls the unknown culprit the “Sehome Poop Terrorist.” However, the resident stressed the dog itself is not to blame.
The suspected dog is a large black canine weighing about 80 to 90 pounds with a docked tail. The resident believes it may be a Great Dane or Rottweiler mix.
Neighbors have reportedly seen the dog walking through the neighborhood with either a blonde woman or a shorter man who often keeps his hood up.
“Need I tell you that this dog is innocent and that he is merely a victim of his situation,” the resident wrote.
The post urged neighbors to stay alert and watch where they step while the resident continues gathering “evidence.”
“I am still collecting evidence as we speak, but I urge you to be alert and aware,” the Reddit poster said. “And please, for the love of God. Look down at where you’re walking. Godspeed my friends.”
Pet waste a wider environmental concern
While the neighborhood complaint used humor, local officials say pet waste can create serious environmental problems.
“Dog poop left on the ground doesn’t just disappear,” a county press release said last year. “It washes into storm drains and ditches, flowing into creeks, rivers, and ultimately our shared marine waters.”
Officials warn bacteria and parasites in pet waste can contaminate shellfish beds, harm wildlife, and make people and pets sick.
County officials estimate about 105,000 dogs live across Whatcom and Skagit counties. Together they produce more than 80,000 pounds of waste every day. That adds up to more than 28 million pounds each year.
The counties recently launched a joint outreach program encouraging dog owners to “Scoop it, Bag it, Trash it.” The campaign includes outreach events at parks, trails, and neighborhoods across the region.
Officials say properly disposing of pet waste helps protect shared outdoor spaces, waterways, and public health.
“As someone who endured the Happy Valley Elementary poop terrorist of 2024, Godspeed my friend,” Reddit user Hopeful Bench wrote.
