SEATTLE — A new neon sign now hangs high above Pike Place Market, marking the first large-scale neon installation at the historic destination in nearly 100 years.
“What sign is this!?” a post from the market on X said. “Today, we installed a new Pike Place Market neon sign, the first new large neon sign at the Market in nearly 100 years.”
Earlier this week, a video showing the giant sign traveling down a Seattle freeway went viral. The clip sparked confusion online as viewers tried to figure out where it was headed. Market officials later confirmed the sign’s destination.
Crews lifted the 16-foot sign into place with a crane. They mounted it nearly six stories above street level. The new vantage point makes it visible from the waterfront, Elliott Bay and passing ferries.
A historic update
The sign expands the Market’s visual presence while staying true to its iconic neon tradition. Large exterior signage at the Market has changed little for decades. This makes the installation one of the most visible updates in generations.
Officials say the sign improves visibility and strengthens the Market’s brand as the waterfront continues to evolve.
Regional expansion
The installation comes as a well-known Market vendor prepares to grow beyond Seattle. Announcements tied to Lummi Bay Market confirm that Piroshky Piroshky plans to open a location at the Lummi Nation development.
The popular market eatery often did “pop up” events at the Lummi Bay Market in Ferndale the last few years.
The move highlights the regional pull of Pike Place businesses.
The viral video, the new sign and the expansion all point to the same trend. Pike Place Market continues to evolve while protecting its identity. The new neon adds a fresh landmark to a revitalized waterfront. The upcoming Lummi Bay location extends the Market’s reach beyond Seattle.
