WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A reported federal immigration enforcement presence at a Bellingham business Wednesday afternoon sparked concern online before the business clarified agents were targeting a specific individual.
A Reddit post shared at about 3:35 p.m. Feb. 19 described three unmarked vehicles with concealed red and blue lights in the parking lot of Mi Rancho Meat Market. The post said the lights were later turned off and the vehicles left. It added that the drivers appeared male and two wore face coverings that obscured their faces from the eyes down.
Business says agents were pursuing specific person
In a later Facebook statement, Mi Rancho Meat Market said agents told staff they were following a specific individual. The business said agents eventually contacted that person near the store.
“The agents have left and stated that they were on the trail of a specific individual, that they eventually caught up with near our business,” the statement said.
The business added that agents did not enter the store. It also said it did not grant permission for enforcement activity inside.
Community reaction
Support for the business quickly appeared online, including from nearby business owner Russell Thompson.
“My Mi Rancho friends, I stand with you,” Thompson wrote, identifying himself as being with Legendary Vinyl Records across the street.
Bellingham resident Mike Bakko also shared a message of support.
“The community is behind you all the way. I’ll make a point to come by and get some of your delicious food,” Bakko wrote.
Others were just glad there was some information about the operation.
“With you, Mi Rancho.,” Anna Evans said. “Thank you for the information.”
Some voiced support for immigration officers.
“Don’t need a warrant, just doing their job,” Ken Parriera said.
No official confirmation released
As of Thursday, federal agencies have not publicly confirmed details about the operation, including which agency was involved or whether an arrest was made.
Visible federal enforcement activity has drawn heightened attention in Whatcom County in recent months. Residents often share sightings online as operations unfold across the region.
