WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A Washington State Patrol trooper confirmed a traffic stop in Bellingham after finding a handmade 2025 registration tab covering a plate linked to a suspended registration and canceled title.
Trooper Kelsey Harding said the vehicle drew attention because the tab appeared fabricated. Investigators determined the vehicle had previously been declared a total loss. The stop occurred during routine patrol, Harding said.
Authorities did not immediately release details about citations or whether the vehicle was impounded.
Why altered tabs draw enforcement attention
Troopers say altered or counterfeit tabs can signal broader compliance issues. Vehicles with suspended registrations or canceled titles often lack valid insurance or legal authorization to operate.
Officers routinely stop vehicles when apparent registration violations appear. These stops often uncover additional violations such as suspended licenses or insurance issues.
What Washington law requires
Washington law requires drivers to display valid plates and current tabs issued to the vehicle. Operating a vehicle without valid registration carries a mandatory $529 fine under state statute.
Displaying altered tabs or obscuring a plate can lead to additional citations. Cases involving intentional falsification can escalate depending on investigative findings.
Part of a broader pattern
Registration-related stops remain common across Whatcom County. Troopers say visible plate enforcement helps identify vehicles that should not be on the road.
The Bellingham stop reflects routine patrol activity focused on confirming vehicle compliance with state registration laws.
